Mom's Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

1 1/2 Cups Sugar
2 Cups Flour
2 Cups Oatmeal
2 Eggs
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1 Lb. Raisins - boiled (in medium sauce pan with enough water to cover raisins)and drained. **Reserve 1/4 Cup of the water after boiling for next step**
1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda - dissolved in 1/4 Cup raisin "juice" (water reserved from previous step)
1/4 teaspoon Cloves
1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
1 teaspoon Vanilla

Cream together shortening, sugar, vanilla and eggs. Add all dry ingredients, mix well. Add raisins and raisin juice with dissolved baking soda. Bake @350 degrees F for 12-15 minutes. Enjoy!!

The recipe is named for my Grandmother on my Father's side of the family, we called her "Mom". This is a family favorite and has been handed down through generations. It is also magic!! It seems that many many times over the years, my brothers (2) show up when these cookies are baked. It started when we were young and they might just be playing down the street (baked by our Grandmother or by our Mother), then progressed through our growing up and moving off in different directions (baked by our Mother or myself)to more recent times (baked by my son). Once my son discovered the magic quality of the cookies he began using it to lure his Uncles over for a visit. It has worked many times, much to my son's delight and has become a family joke. PS. My son is 17 and has been baking these cookies himself for years. He often doubles the recipe (with some measurements adjusted) because they disappear very quickly. I would love to show you the 3x5 index card that I copied the recipe on about 40 years ago, it is in good shape and has only a few stains, it also shows my son's adjusted measurements. The card will be a treasure to me when my son moves off into the world with his own copy.
