Grandma's Intoxicated Sweeties
Grandma's Intoxicated Sweeties
Ingredients:
8 oz pkg chopped dates
1 cup golden raisins
1/2 cup Jamaican dark rum
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
1 1/2 cups oatmeal
1 1/2 cups flour
8 oz pkg chopped walnuts
7 oz pkg sweetened coconut
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
1 egg (well beaten)
1/3 cup molasses
Soak dates and raisins in rum overnight, stirring occasionally. Melt shortening and butter together. Combine all ingredients, including the rum liquid, in large bowl. Mix well. Dough will be sticky. Drop by teaspoonsful onto buttered baking sheets. Bake in pre-heated 350 degree oven for 12 to 15 minutes. Cool completely. Makes 6 dozen cookies.
Grandma's Intoxicated Sweeties are a slightly naughty version of the classic oatmeal cookie. Unlike most cookies, that like to be stored in air-tight containers, these prefer to be kept in paper sacks or set out on a platter to enhance their chewiness. Like Grandma, they improve with age and, no pun intended, are "loaded" with heart-healthy ingredients. Whether you are just a babe, or have your face on a Smucker's jar, all that is needed to indulge in Grandma's Intoxicated Sweeties are "teeth". "So, Grandpa, grab your choppers." "Hey, Grandma, where's the rest of that rum?"
