Grandma Disch���s New Age Shortbreads
Dark Chocolate ��� Pecan

Dark Chocolate ��� Orange
1 cup butter, melted and cooled
2/3 cup brown sugar
tsp vanilla
2+ cups flour
6 oz dark chocolate chips
optional:
tsp orange flavoring
-or-
�� cup chopped pecans
1. preheat oven to 350
2. mix butter, vanilla, brown sugar (and orange as desired)
3. add flour 1 cup at a time, mix well by hand, add small amounts of additional flour until dough is crumbly
4. add chocolate chips and nuts as desired, mix in thoroughly, dough will be crumbly but will hold together when pressed
5. spread onto a cutting board, flatten with the palm of your hand and then cut into 1.5 inch squares using a pizza cutter or long knife.
6. bake 18-20 minutes until edges are barely browning
This recipe is special because it approaches the classic toffee square or shortbread, but it incorporates modern tastes with the use of dark chocolate and either orange oils and flavorings or pecans. The recipe scales up or down easily and is a snap for kids to help with. The recipe is also quite versatile and can accommodate no added extras (classic shortbread), a melted chocolate spread over the top (classic toffee square), cocoa swirled into the mix prior to baking (marbled shortbreads), a variety of milk chocolate and bittersweet chocolates, or the latest in confectionary delights such as raspberry or caramel infused chocolate drops and chips. Our family of four enjoyed updating our grandma���s classic recipe (a holiday favorite) and tried out many variations before settling on these two varieties (dark chocolate ��� orange and dark chocolate ��� pecan) as our favorite variations on the recipe. We think Mrs. Fields would like this recipe because it compliments the other Mrs. Fields offerings while providing a tasty new option for busy moms and business persons visiting the mall stores. |
